Frequently Asked

Everything you need to know about retirement at Llangollen.

Care & Wellbeing

Every new horse undergoes a comprehensive intake assessment upon arrival. We review their complete health history, vaccination records, and any special requirements. A care plan is established in consultation with the owner before the horse is introduced to the herd or their stall. Our team is present for every arrival.

All horses receive daily hands-on health and wellness assessments from our trained care staff. Veterinary visits are scheduled as needed and for routine preventive care. We maintain relationships with several equine veterinarians in the region and will always notify owners before and after any veterinary involvement.

Yes. We regularly care for horses with Cushing's disease, laminitis, arthritis, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and post-surgical needs. The Gold programme is specifically designed for horses with elevated care requirements, offering private stall accommodation, customized feed programs, and close daily monitoring.

A member of our care team is present on the farm at all times. In an emergency, we contact the owner immediately and, if necessary, the owner's preferred veterinarian or our on-call equine vet. We act first and document everything, ensuring owners have full visibility of any incident and its resolution.

We handle end-of-life with the same care and dignity we provide throughout a horse's retirement. Owners are consulted and involved in any end-of-life decisions. We work with your veterinarian or ours. Arrangements for remains — whether burial, cremation, or other — are coordinated in full accordance with the owner's wishes.

Visiting Your Horse

Yes. We welcome owner visits warmly. Please contact us in advance to schedule your visit so that a member of our team can be available to meet you and show you around. There is no limit on the frequency of visits, and we encourage owners to maintain an active relationship with their horses.

Of course. We welcome families, and many owners bring children, partners, and friends to visit. Please let us know in advance how many guests you expect so we can arrange accordingly. We ask that all visitors follow our on-farm protocols for the safety of the horses.

About Llangollen

Llangollen Farm was established in 1795 and has been part of Virginia's equestrian heritage for over 230 years. The property encompasses 1,100 acres of rolling pasture, historic barns, and one of the region's finest equine facilities. Its history as a working horse farm informs every aspect of how we care for horses today.

We maintain a deliberately limited number of horses to ensure every animal receives the attention they deserve. Availability is limited. We encourage prospective owners to enquire early, particularly for the Gold programme.

We accept horses of all breeds and from all disciplines — thoroughbreds, warmbloods, Arabians, quarter horses, eventers, show jumpers, dressage horses, and more. What matters is the horse's need for a dignified, attentive retirement — not their pedigree.

We provide regular updates to all owners. Bronze programme owners receive monthly photo updates. Gold programme owners receive more frequent communication, including details of any health observations and feeding adjustments. All owners are welcome to contact us directly at any time.
